WHO issues warning on fake medicines used for diabetes treatment and weight loss

Photo: Photo Mix Company / Pexels The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a medical product alert on falsified semaglutides, the type of medicines that are used for treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity in some countries. The alert addresses 3 falsified batches of product of semaglutide class of medicines (of specific brand Ozempic), which have been detected in Brazil in October 2023, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in October 2023, and the United States of America in December 2023.  WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS) has been observing increased reports on falsified semaglutide products in all geographical regions since 2022.  This is the first official notice issued by WHO after confirmation of some of the reports. “WHO advises healthcare professionals, regulatory authorities and the public be aware of these falsified batches of medicines,” said Dr Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medic...

COVID-19: Break Patent Strangleholds of Big Pharmaceuticals

While the world is courageously fighting the Covid19 pandemic, we have to reflect on the pharmaceutical industry on whether it has effectively played its role to safeguard us from such diseases.  Unfortunately, this global trillion-dollar industry has not been really investing in innovation to synthesize new drugs in the last few decades.  Research shows that 78 percent of patents approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration FDA) is for modified medications which have been already discovered and are available in the market.  Thus these industries rather ‘sugar coat’ existing medicines in order to apply for new patents for supposedly ‘new drug’.  Investing in innovation for drugs to fight diseases like COVID-19 are not considered growth markets and are usually ignored.  From 2000 to 2011, only 4 percent of newly-approved products globally were designed to treat neglected diseases that affect lower- and middle-income countries.  https://w...
