RM1.7 billion allocation to upgrade Karak Highway is welcome news - MCA

Press statement by MCA Spokesperson Wong Siew Mun

The announcement by the Ministry of Works that RM1.7 billion has been allocated to upgrade Karak Highway is welcome. We believe that after the highway has been upgraded, not only will the perennial congestions be solved, the upgrade will also drive economic development along the East Coast.

The Karak Highway was launched in 1974 and expanded into a complete highway in 1997. It is an important traffic artery connecting the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. In fact, it is the main transportation artery connecting both regions. With an increase in traffic and aging road facilities, concerns grow over safety issues along Karak Highway.

Based on news reports, this allocation will be utilised to expand lanes and build additional tunnels. We believe that in any improvement plans, safety measures to strengthen Karak Highway should be included. These include, identifying blind spots where traffic accidents occur. Adding street lamps and reflectors along the dividers and road, devices, deceleration facilities and others can help lower the probabilities of traffic accidents.

This announcement by the Works Ministry is timely. Not only will the allocation assist to overcome traffic congestion and improve safety, if the upgrade can be completed within 3  years as scheduled and coupled with the launching of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), the economy will definitely be a beneficiary while more citizens will be attracted to travel across both the East and West Coasts.

We hope that the entire project will proceed in a well-planned and orderly manner. In addition to being completed on schedule, adequate safety measures should be undertaken during the construction period so that the impact on road users will be lessened.

Accidents caused by heavy vehicles are a growing threat to road safety

The frequent occurrence of accidents involving trucks and trailers in Malaysia has become a pressing concern, highlighting systemic issues within the country's transportation and enforcement systems.  These heavy vehicles, essential for the logistics and supply chain sectors, have been implicated in numerous fatal accidents, often due to negligence, poor maintenance, or inadequate oversight. One of the glaring problems is the lack of enforcement on overloaded trucks. Overloading not only compromises the stability of these vehicles but also accelerates wear and tear on roads, increasing the risk of accidents.  Despite stringent regulations, enforcement remains inconsistent, allowing errant operators to prioritize profits over public safety. Driver fatigue is another critical factor. Many truck drivers endure grueling hours to meet delivery deadlines, often at the expense of rest and alertness.  Without strict adherence to working hour limits and proper monitoring me...

CIA Declassified: Current Situation in Malaya

17 November 1949 SUMMARY Primarily, Malaya is of importance to the US because it is the world's greatest producer of rubber and tin. In 1948 Malaya produced almost half of the total world production of natural rubber and more than a third of the world production of tin. World War II brought forcibly to US attention the importance of these vital commodities to a war-making machine; they retain their importance, if less urgently, in time of peace, and are on the lists of strategic materials designated for US stockpiling. Through the rubber and tin industries, Malaya is the sterling bloc's biggest dollar-earner. As such, Malaya's economic position materially affects that of the UK in the Western Alliance and thus affects ERP and other US financial commitments in Europe. Of secondary but considerable importance are Singapore's extensive naval facilities and strategic location on world shipping lanes. Control of the Malayan peninsula, and especially th...
